~ Instructions: Peyote Beaded-Beads

~ Here are my project instructions on how to make a beaded-bead using the even-count peyote stitch.

(photos and written pattern instructions copyright by Ania Kyte (2003))

PROJECT:

  • Beaded-beads in a basic cylinder shape (to be used immediately as beads in a bracelet or a necklace, or as a base for further embellishment).

MATERIALS:

  • Delica seed beads, size 11/0, main colour
  • Nymo thread, size B or D, in the colour of the beads or a shade darker
  • Beading needle, size 13 or 15 (an old bent one if available)
  • Scissors

STEP 1:

  • Thread your needle with Nymo thread, size A or B.
  • Pick up one bead – this is your stopper bead (it will be incorporated into the stitch as you work). Go through the stopper bead twice to stop the thread from slipping out. Leave a 3" ‘tail’ coming out of the stopper bead (which will be woven into the piece later).

STEP 2:

  • Pick up 13 more beads (if you are following a pattern, remember that this will be the first and the second row of the design).

STEP 3:

  • Pick up one bead (this will be bead #15), and turn your work or your needle so that you are now working back along the first row of strung beads.
  • Skip one bead, and pass back through the second-last bead of your previous row (bead #13).

STEP 4:

  • Snug up your beads so they are sitting tightly close to each other.
  • Continue to work towards the stopper bead at the beginning of the row, adding one bead every second bead. This will push the first row down to the bottom, the second row into the middle, and you are now completing the third row.

STEP 5:

  • Turn, pick up another bead, and continue to work back and forth across, creating a flat piece of bead ‘fabric’.

STEP 6:

  • Continue to add rows, working back and forth across the top.
  • Stop adding rows when you have 6 beads on end of each side of the peyote strip (this means you have completed 12 rows of peyote stitch).

STEP 7:

  • Fold the strip so that the bottom and top rows meet up and form a ‘zipper’ effect.
  • Weave your thread into each of the ‘zipper’ beads, stitching the top and bottom of the strip together into a smooth cylinder.

STEP 8:

  • Weave in your thread ends back into the work.
  • You now have a finished beaded-bead!

STEP 9:

  • Now, make another one J

STEP 10:

  • Make many beads in variations of different designs or patterns for the bead placement...

STEP 11:

  • Make as many as you need to string together into a bracelet or a necklace - enjoy! J
